Prime Minister Christopher Luxon arrived in Kuala Lumpur on the evening of September 24, 2023, to engage with global leaders at the East Asia Summit. His visit precedes another significant meeting at the APEC leaders summit in South Korea scheduled for September 27. Luxon was welcomed by an honour guard and Hannah Yeoh, Malaysia’s Minister for Youth and Sports.

Luxon’s journey to Malaysia was aboard a Royal New Zealand Air Force Boeing jet, which made a brief stop in Cairns before reaching its destination. The flight experienced a minor delay due to birds obstructing the takeoff from Auckland, but otherwise proceeded without incident.

High-Profile Meetings in Kuala Lumpur

On the same day, former US President Donald Trump made headlines with his arrival in Kuala Lumpur. Accompanied by a Malaysian fighter jet, Trump entertained onlookers with an impromptu dance with local performers upon landing. His visit is expected to overshadow discussions throughout the week, particularly as he seeks to arrange a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping—a significant encounter marking the start of Trump’s second term.

Speaking to reporters before his departure from Wellington, Luxon expressed hope for an informal meeting with Trump, whom he has yet to meet in person. The two leaders previously discussed trade relations after Trump’s recent implementation of “Liberation Day” tariffs, which impose a 15% cost on many New Zealand products entering the US market. This tariff is based on New Zealand’s trade balance, a figure Luxon plans to address during his visit.

Luxon highlighted that New Zealand’s trade dynamics are shifting, referencing a major deal worth approximately $2 billion for five MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, announced in September. “We’ll continue to make the case very strongly for New Zealand exporters,” Luxon stated.

Key Agreements Amidst Diplomacy

Trump’s busy schedule in Kuala Lumpur included overseeing the signing of what he termed the “Kuala Lumpur accords,” a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand. This deal comes after a recent border crisis that resulted in conflict earlier this year, subsequently leading to a ceasefire. Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow characterized the agreement as a “pathway to peace,” referring to it as the “Joint Declaration by the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia on the outcomes of their meeting in Kuala Lumpur.”

Additionally, Trump signed a trade agreement and a critical minerals pact with Malaysia, further solidifying economic ties between the nations. As Luxon engages with various bilateral meetings over the next few days, he will also host an event commemorating New Zealand’s 50-year relationship with the ASEAN bloc.

The outcomes of these meetings and discussions are expected to influence regional relations and trade dynamics significantly, marking a pivotal week in international diplomacy.
