NZ Post Halts US Parcel Deliveries, Impacting Holiday Shipping

New Zealand Post has announced a temporary suspension of parcel deliveries to the United States, causing concerns for individuals and businesses ahead of the holiday season. This decision impacts not only personal gifts but also commercial shipments, including books and other products. The suspension is a direct response to new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, which have complicated international shipping logistics.
Concerns from Families and Small Businesses
The decision has left many families in New Zealand, such as Whangarei resident Carol Ashton, feeling anxious about their ability to send Christmas gifts to loved ones in the United States. Ashton expressed her disappointment, stating that she usually sends presents to her two grandchildren by the end of October. “Christmas and birthdays are special times to think of them,” she said, highlighting the emotional toll of the shipping halt.
Small business owners are also feeling the pressure. Pepper Racoon, who runs a business in Wellington, noted that her parcels began being returned from US customs without explanation about two weeks ago. She emphasized the financial burden that the new tariff collection process may impose on small enterprises, stating, “One of the companies I looked at that is certified to collect these tariffs costs $4,000 USD a year. I simply can’t afford that on top of all my other operating expenses.”
Impact on Authors and the Publishing Industry
The impact extends to the creative industry as well. New Zealand-based romance author Colette Rhodes has reported that the US market constitutes a significant portion of her sales. Although she anticipated the tariffs and stockpiled books, the inability to ship them is a setback. “For readers, this is like the personal touch,” she explained, referring to the signed stickers she includes with her books. “For the time being, I think it’s just a full stop until we get a clear idea of what the system’s going to be and what the cost impact is going to be going forward.”
Rhodes expressed empathy for her American readers who may miss out on products that are easily available in other parts of the world. “It seems very strange—in this super-connected era that we live in—to just not be able to send a package to somebody in the United States of all places,” she added.
Global Shipping Disruptions
The challenges faced by New Zealand Post are not isolated. The postal service indicated that other operators worldwide are also suspending parcel deliveries to the US. A spokesperson for New Zealand Post noted that guidance from US Customs & Border Protection was only recently issued, requiring extensive changes for businesses and postal services alike. These changes include updates to shipment data, duty and tax payments, and the processing of goods for entry into the US.
As of now, New Zealand Post has not provided a timeline for when full postal services to the United States will resume. The ongoing uncertainty poses challenges not only for holiday gifting but also for the broader international shipping landscape, leaving many to navigate the complexities of new regulations in an increasingly interconnected world.
