Pepper Racoon, who runs a business in Wellington, noted that her parcels began being returned from US customs without explanation about two weeks ago. She emphasized the financial burden that the new tariff collection process may impose on small enterprises, stating, “One of the companies I looked at that is certified to collect these tariffs costs $4,000 USD a year. I simply can’t afford that on top of all my other operating expenses.”

The impact extends to the creative industry as well. New Zealand-based romance author Colette Rhodes has reported that the US market constitutes a significant portion of her sales.
