The popular community event, Christmas in the Square, will return on December 6, 2023, marking its 20th anniversary. This cherished gathering promises an evening filled with celebration, entertainment, and community spirit. Coordinated by a dedicated group of local volunteers, it has become one of the most significant annual events in the district.

Supported by the Waimate District Council, community trusts, local businesses, and generous individuals, the event is free to attend. All donations collected during the festivities will benefit the Waimate Community Foodbank, aiming to support local families during the festive season.

Exciting Program and Activities

This year’s lineup features performances from talented local musicians and singers, along with video presentations from various Waimate schools that will be displayed on a large screen. A highlight of the evening will be the return of guest performer Swanney from Christchurch, who played a significant role in the event’s early years and will join the celebrations for this milestone.

As night falls, the program will transition to the beloved Carols by Candlelight, with 900 candles provided by the Whitehorse Lions. The evening will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Families can look forward to a wide range of free activities designed for children and teenagers. These include large outdoor games, bouncy castles, inflatable obstacle courses, bubble soccer, and human foosball. A dedicated area for children under five, a nativity tent with dress-up costumes, and a visit from Santa for an hour early in the evening will offer additional excitement.

Food and Community Spirit

The Waimate Rotary will be providing a free sausage sizzle, alongside complimentary chips and drinks. Attendees can also enjoy food and coffee options from selected vendors, including Mrs Whippy, who will serve ice creams and hot drinks. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and a picnic tea to enhance their experience.

This event not only celebrates the holiday season but also strengthens community ties, reflecting the spirit of giving and support for those in need. With its engaging program and focus on local involvement, Christmas in the Square continues to be a highlight of the year for the Waimate community.
