Dunedin Council Elections: Calvert and Laws Secure Re-election
In the recent council elections for the Dunedin constituency, incumbent councillor Hilary Calvert is poised to reclaim her seat alongside fellow incumbents Andrew Noone and chairwoman Gretchen Robertson. Progress results indicate that with 85% of votes counted, Calvert will continue her role within the council. Newcomer Chanel Gardner and the Green Party’s incumbent Alan Somerville are also projected to secure seats, while incumbents Elliot Weir and Tim Mepham are likely to be excluded from the elected list.
The race between Somerville and Weir was particularly close, reflecting a competitive electoral environment. In the Dunstan constituency, Michael Laws has comfortably re-elected, joined by incumbent Gary Kelliher, Matt Hollyer, and former Central Otago district deputy mayor Neil Gillespie. Calvert, Laws, and Kelliher are members of the fiscally conservative Vision Otago team ticket, which has made a significant impact in this election cycle.
While Carmen Hope was also part of this ticket, she did not secure a position in the Molyneux ward. In that same ward, Act candidate Robbie Byars is currently leading in the progress results, with Kate Wilson expected to be re-elected as well. Incumbent Lloyd McCall is projected to lose his seat, while Kevin Malcolm has retained his position in the Moeraki ward.
The council has noted that the progress results do not yet account for some special votes and ballots that were returned on the day of voting. As such, officials cautioned that the final outcomes may shift once all voting papers are fully counted.
These elections reflect a pivotal moment for the Dunedin council, as the results could signal shifts in local governance priorities and fiscal policies. With the final tally pending, residents and candidates alike await the official announcement of the complete results.
