India and Fiji Forge Stronger Defence and Trade Partnerships

India and Fiji have taken significant steps to enhance their defence and trade relations through a comprehensive action plan. This development follows a series of discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, who is on a three-day visit to India, marking his first official trip since taking office.

During the meeting at Hyderabad House on March 4, 2024, both leaders emphasized their countries’ commitment to fostering a free, inclusive, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. PM Modi noted the shared aspirations that unite India and Fiji, despite the vast geographical distance separating the two nations. The talks covered a broad range of topics, including defence cooperation, trade, healthcare, agriculture, and mobility, all aimed at advancing a resilient partnership.

Fiji has emerged as a key partner for India, especially concerning maritime security. The two countries are focused on expanding their defence ties in light of growing concerns regarding China’s increasing influence in the Pacific. Following their discussions, India and Fiji signed seven agreements designed to enhance collaboration across various sectors.

In a statement, PM Modi highlighted the mutual agreement to bolster cooperation in defence and security, detailing that an action plan has been developed to facilitate these initiatives. He assured that India would provide necessary training and equipment to strengthen Fiji’s maritime security capabilities, further solidifying the commitment to mutual safety and security.

Rabuka’s visit underscores the importance Fiji places on its relationship with India, particularly in the context of regional stability.
