All Blacks Face Key Selection Decisions Ahead of Pumas Rematch

The All Blacks are set to make significant adjustments ahead of their match against the Pumas on August 24, 2024, at the Estadio Vélez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires. Following a strong 41-24 victory over Argentina, head coach Scott Robertson has several intriguing selection choices to consider as the team prepares for this weekend’s clash.
The return of Tamaiti Williams is expected to be a focal point in the lineup. His importance to the squad is unquestionable, and despite the solid performance from Ethan de Groot in Córdoba, Williams is likely to reclaim his starting position. His minutes may be managed due to a recent injury, indicating that whoever backs him up will play a crucial role in the match.
Another potential return is Wallace Sititi, whose comeback has been highly anticipated. Robertson may opt to keep Du’Plessis Kirifi in the starting openside position, allowing Ardie Savea to remain at number eight. Sititi’s experience in the blindside position could be valuable, but Tupou Vaa’i has proven effective there, suggesting a possible retention of the Scott Barrett and Fabian Holland locking combination.
As for Simon Parker, his selection may serve as a countermeasure against the Springboks next month. Despite being picked for crucial tests, he will need game time to integrate into the squad effectively. The bench may feature both Parker and Sititi or Vaa’i, although this could diverge from Robertson’s usual selection strategy.
In the halfback position, Cortez Ratima stood out in Córdoba with an impressive performance, including a remarkable long-range try. He is a clear choice for the starting role. Meanwhile, Finlay Christie faces uncertainty regarding his position on the bench, particularly following a missed tackle that led to a Pumas try. While Christie demonstrated skill in managing possession around the ruck, his defensive performance leaves room for debate.
The midfield remains a point of contention, particularly concerning the All Blacks’ attacking dynamics. Errors in execution were evident last weekend, particularly from Billy Proctor and Rieko Ioane. While Proctor is likely to retain his spot, the backup plan for Ioane may involve shifting him back into the centre. Timoci Tavatavanawai could see limited opportunities if he is not selected, while Quinn Tupaea is expected to fill in for the injured Anton Lienert-Brown.
On the wings, there is a growing desire to see Leroy Carter take the field, especially given his standout performances during Super Rugby Pacific. The All Blacks have a history of selecting young, dynamic players for these positions, and Carter fits that mold.
In terms of leadership, both Scott Barrett and Ardie Savea are expected to hold their positions as captain and vice-captain, respectively. The question arises about the potential to substitute Barrett, allowing Savea to take over leadership during the match. Savea’s decisive decision-making in Córdoba proved effective and could be an asset if he were to lead at critical moments.
As the team gears up for the Pumas, the upcoming selection announcement on Friday morning will provide clarity on how Robertson plans to navigate these pivotal choices. The All Blacks look to build on their recent success while addressing the challenges posed by their opponents.
