Police in Auckland arrested a total of 23 individuals over the weekend following celebrations that turned unruly after Samoa’s 34-6 victory against Tonga in a rugby league test match held in Brisbane. The celebrations, which began with excitement, escalated into dangerous and unlawful behaviour, prompting a strong police response.

Police Response and Arrests

According to reports from Stuff, officers from the Tāmaki Makaurau Police closely monitored popular town centres in areas such as Ōtāhuhu, Māngere, Ōtara, and Clendon on Sunday night. These locations are known for being hotspots where Samoan and Tongan fans gather to celebrate their teams.

While the majority of the festivities remained peaceful, police reported several incidents of “high-risk driving,” which included individuals riding on top of vehicles and aggressive driving tactics that posed risks to both participants and bystanders. In total, 14 arrests occurred on Saturday, followed by an additional nine on Sunday.

Besides the arrests, authorities issued 204 infringement notices related to various driving and road safety violations. A police spokesperson stated, “This behaviour is not only unlawful, it poses a real risk to those participating, spectators, and members of the public,” highlighting the dangers of such actions.

Community Impact and Future Celebrations

In light of these events, police have confirmed that investigations will continue, and they are encouraging the public to report any unlawful or suspicious activity. Authorities emphasized the importance of responsible celebrations, urging fans to commemorate future sporting events in a “lawful and considerate manner” to ensure community safety.

The weekend’s incidents serve as a reminder of the fine line between celebration and chaos, particularly in the context of sporting events that evoke strong emotions. As the rugby league community moves forward, the focus will be on maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all supporters.
