The White Ferns faced a second consecutive defeat in their World Cup warm-up matches, losing to India by four wickets in Bengaluru. In a rain-affected game, the match was reduced to 42 overs, with New Zealand batting first and scoring 232 runs for the loss of eight wickets.

Captain Sophie Devine played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s innings, contributing a solid 54 runs. She was supported by Amelia Kerr, who scored 40, and Maddy Green, who remained unbeaten on 49. However, India’s left-arm spinner Shree Charani was a standout performer, claiming three wickets and stifling the White Ferns’ scoring opportunities.

India’s response began strongly, driven by an impressive partnership from Harleen Deol and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. Deol retired with a remarkable 74 runs, while Kaur added 69 to the chase. Despite a late collapse where India lost four quick wickets, they successfully chased down the target with eight balls to spare.

Bree Illing was particularly effective for New Zealand, taking two wickets, alongside Jess Kerr, who also claimed two scalps. The match underscored areas for improvement for the White Ferns as they prepare for their upcoming tournament fixtures.

In a post-match interview, Green acknowledged the positives despite the defeat. “Disappointing not to get over the line, but the encouraging thing is we’re seeing some really good signs from the squad. Sophie batted brilliantly, and Breezy’s spell was excellent,” she stated. Looking ahead, she expressed optimism about their first game against Australia.

The result in Bengaluru follows New Zealand’s earlier loss to India A in their first warm-up fixture. The White Ferns will now shift their focus to their World Cup opener against Australia in Indore on March 15, 2024. As the tournament approaches, the team is eager to build on the lessons learned from their warm-up matches and deliver strong performances on the world stage.
