La Crique Sets New Zealand Record with Seventh Group 1 Runner-Up

In a remarkable display of consistency, the mare La Crique etched her name in New Zealand racing history on October 7, 2023, by achieving her seventh runner-up finish in a Group 1 race. Competing in the Group 1 Proisir Plate over 1400 meters at Ellerslie, La Crique demonstrated her exceptional talent and determination amidst a competitive field of 16 horses.
The race unfolded dramatically, with nearly half of the field battling fiercely down the straight. La Crique initially held her ground, repelling numerous challengers until she was overtaken by Quintessa, who surged from the back of the pack to claim victory. La Crique’s latest performance sets her apart, as she now holds the record for the most second-place finishes in Group 1 races in New Zealand, surpassing the previous record held by Integrate with six.
Trainer Praises La Crique’s Effort
Following the race, trainer Katrina Alexander, who trains La Crique alongside her husband Simon Alexander, expressed pride in the mare’s performance. “She ran another fantastic race on Saturday and fought so hard,” Katrina commented. “I think she and the others who were fighting it out never even saw Quintessa coming down the outside.”
Katrina acknowledged the impressive nature of Quintessa’s victory, stating, “Full credit to her, it was a huge performance to win the race like that, but our mare did us proud again.” This race not only highlights La Crique’s enduring competitiveness but also solidifies her status as one of New Zealand’s premier racing mares.
Significance of the Achievement
La Crique’s record of seven second-place finishes in Group 1 races is a testament to her consistency and resilience in the highly competitive world of horse racing. Her performances have captivated fans and racing enthusiasts alike, making her a notable figure in New Zealand’s racing landscape. The mare’s journey reflects not just her talent, but the dedication of her trainers and the strong support from her connections.
As La Crique continues to compete at the highest level, her story serves as an inspiration in the sport, demonstrating that perseverance and hard work can lead to significant milestones. The racing community will be keenly watching her future races, as she aims to transform those runner-up finishes into victories.
