Linkin Park and FIFA World Series Set to Energize Auckland in 2026
Auckland is gearing up for an electrifying lineup of international events in 2026, with American rock legends Linkin Park and the FIFA World Series among the highlights. The New Zealand Government has announced a significant investment as part of a $70 million Major Events and Tourism package, aiming to boost the local economy and attract visitors.
Linkin Park will perform at Auckland’s Spark Arena on March 18, 2026, marking their first show in New Zealand since 2013. This performance is particularly noteworthy as it was not part of their original tour itinerary when the From Zero World Tour commenced in 2024. The addition of this concert is expected to generate substantial interest from both local fans and international visitors eager to see one of the most influential rock bands of the 2000s.
In addition to the concert, Auckland will serve as one of the venues for the FIFA World Series 2026. This new international friendly tournament is designed to foster cross-confederation football opportunities, allowing national teams that rarely compete against each other to face off in New Zealand. The event is anticipated to attract significant interest, particularly from Australian football fans, contributing to trans-Tasman travel and enhancing global media exposure.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston revealed that these two events represent an investment of approximately $4.5 million. She emphasized that they are just the beginning, with plans to announce more major acts and events in the coming months.
Boosting the Economy and Tourism
Upston highlighted the broader impact of such events on New Zealand’s economy, stating, “These acts and events are just the start, offering something for hundreds of thousands of fans and visitors, along with a big boost to New Zealand’s economy.” The influx of visitors from events like the FIFA Series is expected to fill hotels, stimulate restaurant activity, and increase foot traffic for local businesses.
The Major Events package also includes collaborations like Six60 and Synthony working together on a new show in Christchurch, and the world-renowned Ultra Music Festival bringing its Miami-style electronic dance music event to Wellington. This diverse mix of entertainment options aims to cater to a wide range of audiences and enhance New Zealand’s reputation as a vibrant event destination.
Future Announcements and Support for Events
The funding for these events is sourced from the $10 million Events Boost Fund and the $40 million Events Attraction Package. More than 70 events are anticipated to receive support through these programs, with further announcements expected early next year.
Upston expressed her delight at the caliber of applications for funding, indicating that there is high interest from event organizers. “We’re working carefully through the process to ensure robust contracts can be signed as soon as possible,” she said.
With a commitment to enhancing tourism and commercial activity across cities, the New Zealand Government aims to not only attract visitors but also invigorate local communities. The upcoming events promise to inject life and energy into Auckland and beyond, marking a new chapter for major international gatherings in the region.
