Otago has secured its place in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) final for the first time in two decades, defeating Bay of Plenty 41-17 at Forsyth Barr Stadium on March 15, 2024. The victory was marked by a remarkable display of teamwork and individual brilliance, thrilling the crowd of 10,764 fans who witnessed the match.

The match began with a high tempo as both teams exchanged early leads. Bay of Plenty capitalized on a couple of penalties by Otago, with openside flanker Veveni Lasaqa scoring the opening try. However, Otago quickly responded, with Jona Nareki crashing over to level the score. The back-and-forth action continued as Bay of Plenty’s Cole Forbes scored following a precise cross-field kick, putting the Steamers ahead once more.

Otago demonstrated its resilience, responding immediately as flanker Lucas Casey set up Josh Whaanga for a crucial try. The first half saw a series of fast-paced plays, with both teams pushing the limits of their defenses. Otago’s Christian Lio-Willie and Will Stodart contributed to the team’s momentum, leading to a halftime score of 21-12 in favor of Otago.

As the second half commenced, Otago maintained its intensity. Cameron Millar scored early, extending the lead and putting pressure on Bay of Plenty. Despite their best efforts, the Steamers struggled to find their rhythm. Millar added a penalty shortly thereafter, further solidifying Otago’s dominance.

The game showcased impressive performances, particularly from returning player Finn Hurley, who scored following a defensive error from Bay of Plenty. In the closing moments, Ngarohi McGarvey-Black managed a consolation try for Bay of Plenty, but it was not enough to dampen Otago’s celebration.

The final score of 41-17 reflects Otago’s comprehensive performance, with tries from Nareki, Lio-Willie, Stodart, Pledger, and Hurley, alongside five conversions and a penalty from Millar. Otago now looks ahead to the final, where they will face the winner of the Canterbury and Hawke’s Bay match, set to take place tomorrow.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Otago, having last won the NPC title in 1998, the same year they recorded seven consecutive wins. As they prepare for the final, the team’s confidence is high, and their performance tonight has set a formidable benchmark for their opponents.
