Paul Coll Triumphs at London Squash Classic, Defends Title
New Zealand’s world No. 3, Paul Coll, successfully defended his title at the London Squash Classic, defeating British player Joel Makin in straight sets. The final match, held at Alexandra Palace, concluded with scores of 13-11, 11-7, and 11-8, marking the 29th title of Coll’s career on the PSA Squash Tour.
Coll’s journey to the final was not without challenges. During the second round, he faced a near exit against Egypt’s Mohamed Abouelghar, surviving three match points to secure his place in the tournament. He then overcame Youssef Soliman and Eain Yow Ng in subsequent matches, ultimately showcasing his best performance in the final.
“I’m stoked,” Coll remarked after the match. “I could have lost in the second round; I was down some match balls, but I knew the type of squash I was playing and I had faith in that.” He added, “It can be tough to have a couple of months off and then come back out. I’m very happy with how I went through the tournament.”
In a poignant moment before his final, Coll’s wife, Nele Gilis, competed in the women’s final but was narrowly defeated by Egypt’s Amina Orfi. Coll acknowledged the emotional balance required during the tournament, stating, “I try and keep my emotions in check. I’m very proud of her; I thought she played really well.”
Looking ahead, Coll is set to participate in the Egyptian Open, which will take place in front of the iconic Great Pyramid of Giza, starting later this week. This next competition promises to be another significant challenge as Coll continues his international squash season.
