Tom Christie Leads Canterbury into NPC Final Before Capacity Crowd

Tom Christie, captain of the Canterbury rugby team, is set to lead his side in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) final against Otago on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in his career. Reflecting on his journey, Christie recalled his childhood admiration for All Black legends such as Richie McCaw and Reuben Thorne. “In-house, we set the dream a few years back to fill the stadium for Canterbury,” he noted. “Probably most of us looked around the room and thought it was unachievable, but we like to think we’ve played a brand of rugby this year that’s excited our fans.” The support from the community has been instrumental in their success, with Christie acknowledging that the fans have helped carry the team through challenging moments this season.

Christie, who made his debut during Canterbury’s last title win in 2017, expressed that he is focusing on enjoying the game rather than dwelling on its significance as his final appearance before joining English club Newcastle. “It probably won’t be until I reflect… I think the emotion will probably come after the whistle,” he said. “I’m just lapping it up. Enjoying every moment.”

The team recently visited Lancaster Park, the province’s former home before the 2011 earthquake, where they secured eight titles from 1977 to 2010. Christie reminisced about his early experiences there, recalling matches played against fellow players at a young age. “It’s a special place, so it was nice to revisit some of that history,” he added.

As he prepares for the final, Christie acknowledged the significance of leading Canterbury, a team he idolized as a child. “To play one game for Canterbury is special. To play 80-odd and to lead the side is something I will always cherish,” he stated. His achievements this season include winning a Super Rugby Pacific title with the Crusaders and competing fiercely for the Ranfurly Shield.

Coach Marty Bourke praised Christie’s development and leadership. “He’s really matured in his work,” Bourke emphasized. “He leads with his heart and he knows this is his last season in red and black.” Bourke highlighted Christie’s dedication, noting his impressive defensive skills and commitment to the team.

Christie and centre Brady Ennor are the only current players from the 2017 final win, with the team aiming to build on past experiences and elevate their performance. “We’ve played good footy over the years, but I think now is our chance to just go that one level higher,” Christie remarked.
