Warriors Adjust Lineup as Wayde Egan Out with Hip Injury
The New Zealand Warriors have announced a significant injury-enforced change to their lineup ahead of their match against the Manly Sea Eagles on September 29, 2023. Wayde Egan will not participate due to a hip injury, leading to Samuel Healey being named to start in the No 9 jersey for his sixth appearance of the season.
In a statement, head coach Andrew Webster emphasized the need for caution with Egan’s condition. He is expected to return for the first week of the NRL finals, which would mark his 150th NRL match. This strategic decision reflects the Warriors’ focus on both immediate performance and long-term player health as they push for a top-four finish in the league.
The Warriors currently occupy sixth place in the NRL standings, and their path to a top-four finish hinges on their performance against the Sea Eagles. They must secure a win while also hoping for favorable outcomes in other matches. Specifically, the Warriors need the Brisbane Broncos and Cronulla Sharks to lose against the Melbourne Storm and Canterbury Bulldogs, respectively.
Webster’s adjustments extend beyond Egan’s absence; Tanner Stowers-Smith has been named to start at prop. Previously, he had been used off the interchange bench in the last two matches, demonstrating the Warriors’ commitment to optimizing their lineup as they enter the critical phase of the season.
As the NRL finals approach, the stakes are high for the Warriors. A victory against the Sea Eagles is not just essential for their immediate standing but also for building momentum heading into the playoffs. The team will look to capitalize on their home advantage and the support of their fans in this crucial encounter.
