Auckland City Triumphs in Tense Penalty Shootout for 11th Title
Auckland City secured their 11th national league title following a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Wellington Olympic on July 29, 2023. The match, held at Newtown Park in Wellington, ended in a 2-2 draw after extra time, leading to the tension-filled shootout where Auckland emerged victorious 7-6.
The game began with both teams displaying a strong defensive effort, resulting in a goalless first half. The breakthrough came in the 80th minute when Auckland City’s Matt Ellis scored with a powerful header, connecting with a pinpoint cross from Steve Sumner MVP Medal winner Haris Zeb. However, Wellington equalized in stoppage time through Luke Stoupe, who finished a cutback from Sam Mason-Smith, forcing the match into extra time.
As the teams battled through the additional 30 minutes, the pressure mounted. Auckland City needed a late equalizer after Wellington had taken a 2-1 lead thanks to a strike from Isa Prins in the 103rd minute. Christian Gray, known for his crucial contributions throughout the season, stepped up to level the score once again, sending the match to penalties.
The shootout started with a twist for Auckland, as their captain, Mario Ilich, saw his initial attempt saved by Wellington goalkeeper Scott Basalaj. The pressure shifted to Wellington when they needed a goal from their fifth taker, Alex Solomon, to secure the title. Solomon, however, missed the opportunity, allowing Auckland to regain their footing.
With both teams exchanging successful penalties, the climax came when Wellington’s Alex Davies struck the crossbar, sealing Auckland City’s victory. Ilich expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, emphasizing the hard work and dedication that led to their successful season. “Honestly, I’m speechless after the journey we’ve been through, I’m so proud,” he stated during the FIFA+ telecast.
This victory adds to an impressive season for Auckland City, which included winning the Oceania Champions League and competing in the FIFA Club World Cup finals in the United States as well as the FIFA Intercontinental Cup playoff in Egypt. Coach Paul Ifill, managing his last match for the club, experienced the bittersweet nature of the shootout, but he leaves behind a legacy of success.
The match not only showcased the skill and determination of both teams but also highlighted the high stakes of New Zealand football. The award for man of the match went to Haris Zeb, while Owen Smith of Miramar Rangers was recognized as the league MVP. Martin Bueno also received the Golden Boot award for being the top scorer of the league.
As Auckland City celebrates this latest triumph, they continue to solidify their place in the history of New Zealand football, with a trophy cabinet that reflects their enduring success and commitment to the sport.
