Auckland Producers Transform Home with Modern Design Features
In a striking blend of modern functionality and classic design, Bronwynn and Cameron Bakker have transformed their home in Grey Lynn, Auckland. The couple, who are television producers, purchased the property in March 2016, seeking a family-friendly space that would accommodate their growing needs.
The Bakker home reflects early 20th-century Kiwi architecture, celebrated for its spacious rooms and high ceilings. However, they have infused the interior with contemporary elements, notably by creating a large kitchen that serves as the heart of their open-plan living area.
Bronwynn Bakker describes their swift decision to buy the house, stating, “We looked at it on a Sunday and bought it on the Tuesday.” The couple quickly recognized the property’s potential after living in a smaller cottage in Arch Hill. Since moving in, they have welcomed two children, Fred, aged 4, and Harry, aged 2, along with their dog, Kevin, who inspired the name of their television production company, Kevin & Co..
The couple’s production company, launched in 2018, has produced popular shows such as Taskmaster (New Zealand and Australia) and New Zealand Today with Guy Williams. Their busy work schedule, combined with parenting and home renovations, has kept the couple on their toes.
Revamping the Kitchen and Bathrooms
The Bakker family undertook significant renovations to enhance the functionality of their home. The previous kitchen, small and lacking storage, was not suitable for a family of four. To address this, they enlisted the help of designer Melanie Sa’u from Melanie Sa’u Design Studio.
“Our big brief was functionality,” Bronwynn explains. “We wanted something in keeping with the house, but a little more different, and a little more modern.” The resulting design features an expansive island with a built-in table, strategically placed next to new French doors and a cozy window seat.
The cabinetry combines dark Melteca Melamine with paler Seasoned Oak veneers, while the benchtops are crafted from Florim porcelain in Marble Yamuna. “We left it completely up to her,” Bronwynn notes, emphasizing their trust in the designer.
The Bakker family also undertook a redesign of their bathrooms, collaborating with Sa’u on furnishings and decor choices. They chose childproof leather sofas from Cameron’s parents, ensuring the space remains practical yet stylish.
Creating a Family-Friendly Environment
As parents, the Bakkers prioritize a home that supports their children’s activities. They converted a large front room into a playroom, complete with a wall of storage to keep toys organized. The decor includes playful elements, with items from their work on Taskmaster finding their way into Fred’s room.
Bronwynn embraces a philosophy of allowing toys to remain accessible, stating, “Your house will be clean again; they won’t be young again.” This approach reflects their commitment to a joyful, chaotic family life rather than a perfectly tidy home.
The couple has also made strides in energy efficiency by gradually double-glazing the house, starting with the bedrooms. Their extensive landscaping project includes the addition of a pool, a large timber deck, and tropical plants which enhance their outdoor space.
In a Q&A, the couple shared insights into their renovation journey. Bronwynn highlighted the importance of functionality and storage, noting that the kitchen redesign significantly altered how they use the space. Cameron mentioned the swimming pool, which sparked debate about potential overcapitalization but has proven worthwhile, as local real estate agents confirmed pools add value in their area.
When discussing their local community, Cameron expressed appreciation for nearby Grey Lynn Park, which offers a great playground for their children. The family frequently enjoys meals at local eateries such as Prego, Dizengoff, and Daily Bread, balancing work and family life with leisure activities.
As the Bakkers continue to navigate their busy lives, they remain committed to creating a home that reflects their values and meets their family’s needs. Their journey illustrates the importance of blending practicality with modern design, making their Auckland residence a true reflection of their lifestyle.
