Banksy Artworks to Make Christchurch Debut This Summer

Christchurch is set to welcome the works of the elusive artist Banksy for the first time, as the exhibition titled The Art of Banksy opens at the Te Pae Convention Centre. The showcase will run from December 17, 2023, to January 27, 2024, excluding public holidays, offering art enthusiasts a rare opportunity to engage with the artist’s thought-provoking pieces.
This exhibition has already captivated over 1.5 million visitors across 20 cities worldwide, showcasing the enduring appeal of Banksy’s work. Attendees in Christchurch can expect a diverse collection featuring prints, canvases, unique works, and intriguing ephemera that delve into Banksy’s creative process.
Among the highlighted pieces will be iconic artworks that propelled Banksy to international fame, such as the Girl with Balloon. This piece will be displayed in four distinct color variations, including a rare Gold Edition. Additionally, visitors will have the chance to view the original Flower Thrower and gain insights into its origins through a video interview with Banksy’s former girlfriend, Leonie Laws.
The exhibition’s curator, Boersma, expressed enthusiasm about bringing this expansive collection to Christchurch. “Following a hugely successful 19-city global tour and two years in London, we’re very excited to bring this larger-than-ever collection to Christchurch,” Boersma stated. He noted that the collection has significantly grown over the years, expanding from 70 works in Auckland in 2018 to over 150 authenticated and genuine pieces for this exhibition, with all artworks being original and no replicas included.
General manager of Te Pae, Ross Steele, emphasized the significance of this event, describing it as a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. “This is the chance for art lovers to experience something incredibly unique this summer—whether you are a long-time Banksy fan or interested in the story behind some of the fascinating works,” Steele said. He highlighted the exhibition as an unmissable opportunity for locals and visitors alike to get close to Banksy’s artworks.
Steele also remarked on the versatility of the venue, pointing out that hosting this exhibition underscores Te Pae’s commitment to providing world-class events to the region. As the summer approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be an extraordinary display of creativity and cultural commentary from one of the art world’s most enigmatic figures.
