Authorities confirmed on September 8, 2023, that the two missing children of Tom Phillips have been found alive and safe. The discovery comes after a prolonged search that has lasted several years, during which Phillips had been evading law enforcement with his three children since December 2021.

Incident Details in Waikato

The search intensified following a police operation in the Waikato region early on the same day. This incident began around 02:30 when police responded to reports of an alleged burglary at a commercial property in Piopio. During the response, a confrontation occurred that resulted in a police officer being critically injured and a man, suspected to be Phillips, being shot and killed by police.

According to Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers, one of Phillips’ children played a crucial role in assisting police efforts to locate their siblings. “The child was unharmed and is currently receiving support,” she stated during a press briefing.

The events leading to the police confrontation started when two individuals were observed on a quad bike near the burglary site. A passerby alerted authorities, leading police to deploy road spikes in an attempt to stop the vehicle. At approximately 03:20, the quad bike hit the spikes and came to a halt. As police approached, the driver allegedly fired multiple shots, injuring an officer before being shot by police.

Ongoing Investigation and Support for Families

In the aftermath of the incident, Waikato Police released a statement detailing the events and emphasizing their commitment to the ongoing investigation. “A significant police operation is underway, and we ask both the media and the public to respect the cordons in place to ensure safety,” the statement read.

The injured officer was airlifted to Waikato Hospital, where he remains in serious condition. Police indicated that multiple firearms were recovered at the scene, which raised further concerns regarding the potential dangers surrounding the search for Phillips.

Prior to the recovery of the two children, police expressed serious concerns for their well-being, stating that urgent inquiries were being conducted to locate them. They also confirmed they had been in contact with Phillips’ family to provide necessary support during this “deeply traumatic” time.

As the investigation continues, authorities are focused on establishing a complete timeline of the events that unfolded. The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified, following standard protocol for incidents involving police use of firearms.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The community remains on alert as the situation develops, with police assuring the public of their ongoing commitment to safety and transparency.
