Silver Ferns Selector Resigns in Solidarity With Taurua

Gail Parata has resigned from her position as selector for the Silver Ferns in a display of support for Dame Noeline Taurua, following her unexpected standing down by Netball New Zealand (NNZ). Parata, a former international player and seasoned coach, expressed her dismay at the treatment of Taurua, who has been pivotal in New Zealand netball.
In a detailed Facebook post, Parata highlighted the shock felt throughout the coaching community after NNZ’s decision to sideline Taurua just 11 days before the Taini Jamison Trophy series against South Africa. This decision has raised concerns about the implications for other coaches in New Zealand. Parata questioned the stability of coaching roles, emphasizing that if someone of Taurua’s caliber could be dismissed, it could happen to any coach.
Coaching Controversy Unfolds
The situation escalated after two players, representing a larger group, approached the New Zealand Netball Players’ Association to voice serious concerns about Taurua’s leadership and communication. This followed a nine-day training camp in Sydney in January. The response from NNZ included an independent review, leading to Taurua’s removal on the eve of the South Africa series.
Parata praised Taurua’s coaching philosophy, stating, “Dame Noeline isn’t just a coach — she’s a master of her craft.” She underscored Taurua’s ability to foster relationships and elevate the team while representing Aotearoa with integrity. Parata’s resignation comes at a crucial time, as the Silver Ferns prepare for their four-match Constellation Cup series against Australia starting on September 27, 2023.
The fallout has left the Silver Ferns’ selection panel in a precarious position. Parata, along with former Silver Ferns coach and captain Leigh Gibbs and Adrianne Hayes, formed a four-member selection team. Following Taurua’s departure, the National Selection Panel (NSP) revised its structure, reducing the number of selectors and implementing changes that Parata criticized as undermining the integrity of the selection process.
Parata pointed out that effective selection is vital in any high-performance environment. She stated that prior to the changes, the panel had engaged in thorough discussions and evaluations of players. These discussions ensured that even those not selected for upcoming matches received detailed feedback and clarity on their performance.
The resignation of Parata and the standing down of Taurua have sparked a broader discussion about the governance and decision-making processes within NNZ. Parata’s concerns reflect a growing unease among coaches and players about the future of leadership in New Zealand netball.
As the Silver Ferns gear up for their match against Australia, the impact of these recent developments looms large over the team and its supporters. NNZ has been approached for further comment on the situation, but as of now, the focus remains on how the Silver Ferns will navigate this challenging period in their coaching and selection landscape.
