Auckland Unveils Stunning Artwork at Waitematā Station Plaza
Auckland’s train commuters will soon be welcomed by an impressive new entrance to Waitematā Station, featuring a striking 31-tonne concrete artwork created by acclaimed artist Graham Tipene. This artwork, named Skylid, is a circular structure positioned at the eastern entrance of the station. As part of the City Rail Link project, it marks a significant milestone in Auckland’s urban development.
The Skylid artwork, designed in collaboration with mana whenua, showcases a sand-blasted motif that reflects the movement of converging waters. It embodies not only artistic vision but also cultural significance, weaving together the heritage of the local iwi—Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Hauā, and Ngāti Manu—into its design.
Completion Timeline and Future Developments
The completion of the City Rail Link is anticipated for February 2026, at which point the glass atrium will open into a newly created space, dubbed Waitematā Station Plaza. This plaza will serve as a central hub for commuters and visitors, enhancing the overall travel experience in Auckland’s bustling downtown area.
As the city continues to grow, the integration of art and culture into public spaces underscores a commitment to enriching the community’s identity. The unveiling of Skylid exemplifies how infrastructure projects can harmonize with local heritage and artistic expression.
This new addition to the Auckland landscape not only beautifies the station but also serves as a reminder of the region’s rich history and the stories of its people. The collaboration with local iwi has ensured that the artwork resonates with cultural significance, making it a landmark piece for both residents and tourists alike.
Anticipation builds as the City Rail Link project progresses, promising to transform the way Aucklanders navigate their city. With the Skylid artwork at its forefront, the station will not only function as a transit point but also as a destination in its own right, celebrating both the past and the future of Auckland.
