Auckland Woman Discovers Stage 3 Cancer During IVF Journey

A 32-year-old woman from Auckland, New Zealand, received a shocking diagnosis of stage 3 Hodgkin lymphoma while undergoing her first round of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Jenna Ellen, a salon owner, and her partner of 16 years, Josh, had recently embarked on their journey to start a family, but the unexpected news has altered their plans significantly.
In her pursuit of motherhood, Jenna began IVF treatments last month. Leading up to the procedure, she experienced a series of concerning symptoms, including a persistent dry cough, a hoarse voice, shortness of breath, and a tight sensation in her chest. “Because I’m a hairdresser, I’m constantly talking over a dryer or working in a busy salon. I just thought it was normal,” she recounted, reflecting on her initial dismissal of her symptoms.
Jenna’s journey took a dramatic turn when medical professionals discovered the presence of Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that impacts the lymphatic system. The diagnosis came as a shock not only to her but also to her partner, as they had been eagerly planning for their future family. “I was looking forward to conceiving and hopefully being a mum. This just completely was not on our 2025 bingo card,” Jenna expressed in an interview with the Daily Mail.
Facing the Challenge
Receiving a cancer diagnosis at such a pivotal moment in their lives has introduced both emotional and logistical challenges for the couple. Jenna is currently evaluating her treatment options while navigating the complexities of her IVF journey under the shadow of her illness.
Hodgkin lymphoma is known for its high treatability, particularly when identified in earlier stages. However, the diagnosis at stage 3 indicates that the cancer has spread beyond the lymph nodes, which may require a more intensive treatment approach. Jenna’s medical team is working diligently to create a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses both her cancer and her desire to conceive in the future.
As Jenna embarks on this challenging path, she hopes to raise awareness about the importance of not overlooking symptoms, regardless of one’s daily routines or occupations. The couple continues to seek support from family, friends, and cancer support networks as they face this unexpected journey together.
In light of her diagnosis, Jenna emphasizes the necessity of prioritizing health and being attentive to one’s body. Her story serves as a reminder that early detection and intervention can play critical roles in effectively managing health conditions, especially when planning for significant life changes such as starting a family.
As Jenna and Josh navigate this difficult period, their resilience and commitment to each other remain strong. With the right medical support and a determined spirit, they are hopeful for a brighter future ahead.
