Family Calls for Action on Driver Fatigue After Teen’s Tragic Death

The family of a Rotorua teenager, Jade Richards, who died in a car crash after attending the Rhythm & Vines festival, is urging festival organizers to take stronger measures against driver fatigue among young concertgoers. The tragic incident occurred on January 1, 2023, when Jade was a rear seat passenger in a vehicle driven by her friend, Jasmine May Donaldson. The car crashed into a rock wall on State Highway 30, just 20 kilometers from their home in Rotorua.
Jade’s family has expressed deep concern over the lack of support for festival attendees who may be too fatigued to drive safely after multiple nights of partying. They believe that music festivals should implement strategies that encourage safer travel options for young attendees returning home. The festival’s spokesperson stated that the event grounds remain open to allow attendees time to recover before heading home, emphasizing personal responsibility in assessing their own fatigue levels.
The circumstances surrounding the crash highlight a growing issue of driver fatigue, particularly among young people after attending late-night events. According to the New Zealand Transport Agency, fatigue is a significant factor in road accidents, contributing to a considerable number of fatalities each year. In light of Jade’s death, her family is calling for enhanced education and resources to help prevent similar tragedies.
The incident has also drawn attention from local authorities, who recognize the importance of promoting safe transportation options for festival-goers. Community leaders are advocating for increased public transport services during major events, along with more accessible accommodation options for those who may not be fit to drive home.
In the wake of this tragedy, conversations about road safety and the responsibilities of event organizers have intensified. As more young people attend festivals like Rhythm & Vines, it is crucial for stakeholders to collaborate in creating a safer environment that prioritizes the well-being of attendees.
Jade’s family hopes that by sharing her story, they can inspire changes in policy and raise awareness about the risks associated with driving while fatigued. They are determined to ensure that their daughter’s legacy will contribute to a safer future for others.
