Search Intensifies for 11-Year-Old Missing in British Columbia
An 11-year-old boy, identified as Kai Pavlovic, has gone missing in British Columbia, prompting urgent efforts from law enforcement and grave concerns from his family in New Zealand. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Burnaby are actively seeking the public’s assistance to locate him, having received a request for a wellbeing check on September 26, 2023.
According to the Burnaby RCMP, initial investigations revealed that Kai may be staying with a caretaker whom authorities do not know. Officers have engaged with family members as part of the investigation and have dedicated numerous resources to verify Kai’s whereabouts. Despite these efforts, police have not yet been successful in confirming his location.
Community Appeal and Family Concerns
The RCMP emphasized the importance of public awareness in their search. A spokesperson stated, “Our investigators are making every effort to find Kai and we are asking for the public’s help as part of those ongoing efforts.” They have shared Kai’s picture widely, seeking information from anyone who may have seen him or know who is looking after him.
Family members expressed their deep concerns for Kai’s safety through a Givealittle fundraising page established for support. The page noted that Kai has been living in Canada with limited contact with his family in New Zealand over the past year. Concerns about his wellbeing were raised by relatives from his deceased father’s side, which ultimately led to the wellbeing check request.
Despite extensive appeals for sightings, no credible leads have emerged. Family members from Christchurch are planning to travel to Canada to assist in the search for Kai.
Official Statements and Missing Person Protocols
In light of the missing child case, the RCMP clarified the criteria for issuing an Amber Alert. They indicated that such alerts are activated only in confirmed abduction cases where there is imminent danger to the child. Currently, the information available does not meet these criteria.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) in New Zealand acknowledged the situation, stating that they were aware of the missing child reports. The MFAT informed that their high commission in Ottawa has provided initial guidance to a family member regarding available support. For privacy reasons, they refrained from disclosing further details.
The situation remains urgent, with authorities and family members hopeful for any new information that can lead to Kai’s safe return. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact local police to assist in confirming his safety.
