Mensik Returns to Auckland After Breakthrough Season
Tomas Mensik, the rising tennis star, has confirmed his return to the ASB Classic in Auckland, following a standout performance earlier this year. Starting the season ranked No 49, Mensik made headlines by defeating former world top-10 player Pablo Carreno Busta and pre-tournament favourite Ben Shelton during the event.
Reflecting on his victory against Shelton, Mensik stated, “Winning in Auckland against Ben Shelton was a special moment for me. At the time, I had not beaten many guys in the top 20, so in the second round and early in the season, this gave me a lot of confidence.” The young athlete described the match as “spectacular,” highlighting the vibrant atmosphere surrounding the court. He added, “I had so much fun and I’m looking forward to seeing you guys again.”
Mensik’s triumph in Auckland was just the beginning of a remarkable year. He went on to win the prestigious Masters 1000 in Miami, a milestone that he considers a key moment in his career. “Beating Novak Djokovic in the final made it more special as he was my idol when I was young,” he noted. The success in Miami significantly boosted his confidence, prompting good performances in subsequent tournaments.
As the ASB Classic approaches, several notable players have confirmed their participation, including defending champion Gael Monfils, 2025 finalist Naomi Osaka, and New Zealand’s top player Lulu Sun. The tournament will kick off on January 5, 2025, with the women’s competition, while the men’s tournament will commence a week later.
With Mensik’s recent successes and the return of other prominent players, the ASB Classic promises to be an exciting event for tennis fans in Auckland.
