Emma Upton Completes 680km Run from Auckland to Wellington for Men’s Mental Health
Emma Upton, a 20-year-old athlete, has successfully completed a remarkable journey, running approximately 680 kilometers from Auckland to Wellington over the course of ten days. Her mission was to raise funds and awareness for men’s mental health through the charity Movember, ultimately collecting $26,000 for the cause.
Starting her run on March 27, 2024, Emma crossed the finish line at Waitangi Park in Wellington on April 7, 2024. Throughout her trek, she balanced her running schedule with her job as a barista, showcasing an impressive level of determination. Her father, Tim Upton, expressed his admiration for her drive, stating, “She’s just very mentally strong.”
Personal Motivation Behind the Run
Emma’s commitment to mental health awareness is deeply personal. Tim shared that the issue resonates with their family, particularly after the tragic loss of his brother to suicide several years ago. Emma, who has also faced mental health challenges, decided to take action after witnessing friends struggle with similar issues. “A woman doing this for us guys is something really special,” Tim noted, highlighting the emotional significance of Emma’s efforts.
To ensure her safety during the run, Tim and his wife, Vicki, accompanied Emma in a vehicle, helping manage traffic and making sure she had adequate nourishment. They opted for back roads to keep Emma away from the busy expressway, initially heading to Cambridge, then Taupō, before continuing down the Desert Road and along the Kāpiti Coast.
A Journey of Dedication and Community Support
Emma’s athletic journey began seriously about a year and a half ago, with her previous fundraising effort involving running a half marathon each day for 30 days, raising around $10,000 for Movember. Her decision to run from Auckland to Wellington this year marked a significant escalation in her commitment to the cause.
As she approached the final stretch of her run, friends joined her for the last 5 kilometers, providing much-needed support and camaraderie. Tim reflected on the experience, stating, “She put a smile on her face, and her body’s holding up … It’s been one hell of a journey. She’s just a little legend.”
With her ambitious run now complete, the family plans to celebrate at Rosie’s Red-Hot Cantina before returning home to Raumati South. Tim believes that Emma will recover quickly and may soon set her sights on another challenge, potentially contemplating a run through the South Island. “Knowing Emma, she’ll bounce back, and probably within two days she’ll be telling us she wants to run the South Island,” he said, capturing her relentless spirit.
Emma Upton’s journey not only illustrates her physical endurance but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and community support. Her efforts have undoubtedly made a significant impact, both in terms of fundraising and inspiring others to prioritize mental wellbeing.
