Matt Payne Claims Dramatic Victory at Bathurst 1000

Kiwi driver Matt Payne secured a thrilling victory at the Bathurst 1000 on October 8, 2023, overcoming daunting conditions and a challenging start to the race. The event, held at the legendary Mount Panorama circuit, is a highlight of the Australian Supercars championship and witnessed several dramatic moments as competitors battled treacherous wet weather.
Starting from the 18th position, Payne showcased remarkable skill and determination as he navigated through a field that saw multiple contenders falter under the relentless rain. Notably, fellow Kiwi Ryan Wood faced misfortune, retiring to the pits with 20 laps remaining after a brief moment in the lead.
Payne’s race was not without its own challenges; he experienced a spin while contesting with Cooper Murray for the lead, which pushed him back to third place. However, a collision between Murray and James Golding altered the race’s dynamics, allowing Payne to regain the lead. Following the incident, Golding received a five-second penalty, which ultimately influenced the race outcome as Payne maintained his position on the final lap.
Reflecting on his victory, Payne remarked, “In the wet, when I got back in the car, it felt forever. Safety cars kept stalling our race. I saw Jimmy get into the side of Cooper and I kind of predicted that was going to happen. I managed to get through, but felt like I ran out of tyres at the end. A win’s a win and we’ll take it.”
The triumph marked a significant achievement for Payne, who demonstrated exceptional composure throughout the race. Veteran co-driver Garth Tander, who secured his sixth Bathurst crown, praised his partner’s performance, stating, “Something about tall Kiwis at Bathurst. He kept away and kept his calm, even managed that last lap, when Golding was mucking around with his five-second penalty. That was a seriously impressive drive, really happy to be part of it.”
As the Bathurst 1000 concluded, the race highlighted not only the unpredictable nature of motorsport but also the resilience of drivers in challenging conditions. Payne’s victory solidifies his status as a formidable competitor in the Supercars championship, while Tander’s continued success adds to his legacy in the sport.
