Children Explore Construction Through Eastern Busway Project
Children at WonderKids Childcare and Preschool in Burswood are actively engaging with the construction of the Eastern Busway, turning a local infrastructure project into a valuable learning experience. This initiative not only captivates the young minds in the community but also integrates key educational principles from New Zealand’s Te Whariki curriculum.
The excitement began in August when construction commenced near the preschool. The sounds of trucks, excavators, and construction activity sparked the curiosity of the children. According to Kate Zhang, a teacher at WonderKids, the children were immediately drawn to the “daily symphony” of the construction site, leading them to ask questions like, “What’s making that noise?” and “How do they build roads?”
Recognising an opportunity for education, the teachers at WonderKids transformed the children’s curiosity into a structured learning project. “We seized this authentic teachable moment,” Zhang explained. The project developed organically over several months, encompassing various educational phases.
Phases of Learning
The first phase focused on understanding construction fundamentals and materials science. Children conducted hands-on comparisons of concrete samples with natural materials like wood and stone. They also explored tool literacy, engaging with items such as construction helmets and high-visibility vests, alongside toy versions of actual tools.
The second phase shifted towards safety and social understanding. Here, the preschoolers learned about site safety rules and their relevance to personal safety, such as why it is essential to hold hands near roads and traffic lights. Using construction cones, teachers facilitated lessons on spatial awareness that connected the construction site to their everyday experiences.
In the third phase, termed “community co-creation,” children expressed their frustration about not being able to see the construction activities clearly. In response, the project managers of the Eastern Busway proposed installing four plexiglass observation panels at child-height. This innovative solution transformed the safety barriers into portals of curiosity, enabling children to observe the construction process first-hand.
Building Community Connections
Zhang highlighted how this initiative embodies the vision of Te Whariki, which emphasises learning through responsive relationships with people, places, and things. By making urban development visible and relatable, the project fosters a sense of community connectedness, encouraging children to view their city as a shared responsibility.
“This partnership illustrates that the best learning occurs when children’s questions help shape their curriculum, supported by community allies like the Eastern Busway,” Zhang noted. She emphasised that everyday environments can become extraordinary classrooms when communities unite to nurture children’s innate curiosity.
As the Eastern Busway project continues, it serves not only as a significant infrastructure development but also as a remarkable educational opportunity for the young learners at WonderKids. The initiative underscores the importance of integrating real-world experiences into early childhood education, demonstrating that learning can extend beyond the classroom and into the heart of the community.
