Australia Optimistic About Pat Cummins’ Availability for Ashes
Australia’s cricket team remains hopeful that captain Pat Cummins will play a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series. George Bailey, the head selector, provided updates on Cummins’ fitness as concerns linger regarding his readiness for the opening Test scheduled for November 21, 2023, in Perth. Cummins is currently recovering from a back stress injury and has not yet resumed bowling, making his participation uncertain.
During a media briefing on Saturday, Bailey stated, “It’s progressing. He’s building up. He’s optimistic about it.” He also acknowledged that Cummins had not yet bowled a ball but noted that the captain’s recent progress has boosted his spirits. “We know time is getting short,” Bailey added, highlighting the urgency of the situation. While the team remains optimistic about Cummins’ availability, they are prepared for contingencies should he be unable to play in the opener.
In a further setback for Australia, all-rounder Cameron Green has been ruled out of the One-Day International series against India due to “low-grade side soreness” sustained during training. Bailey assured reporters that the injury is minor and said, “This decision probably ensures that we do have enough time to make sure.” Green’s absence is particularly disappointing as the team had invested significant effort into preparing him for the first Test as an all-rounder.
Australia Dominates India in Opening ODI
While the team navigates these injury challenges, Australia’s stand-in captain Mitchell Marsh led his side to a commanding victory over India in the first ODI, scoring an unbeaten 46 runs. The match, held in Perth, was disrupted by rain, but Australia successfully chased down a revised target of 131 runs in just 21.1 overs, winning by seven wickets.
India struggled to establish a foothold, managing only 136 runs for nine wickets in 26 overs. Marsh’s aggressive batting, including three sixes, was pivotal in steering Australia to victory. The crowd of 42,423, filled with enthusiastic supporters, witnessed the return of renowned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, although neither made a significant impact against Australia’s pace attack.
Spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who took two wickets for 26 runs, commented on the significance of dismissing top-order batsmen. “In one-day cricket, especially, to get wickets up front makes a massive difference,” he explained. The Australian bowlers effectively dismantled India’s batting lineup, leaving them reeling at 37 for three at one point.
As the series progresses, Australia will look to build on this momentum, with the next ODI set to take place in Adelaide on Thursday before concluding in Sydney on Saturday. The team is keen to maintain their winning streak while managing the fitness of key players like Cummins and Green ahead of the prestigious Ashes series.
