Two medical professionals from Waikato are gaining recognition in a new documentary series, I Am a Doctor, which showcases healthcare practitioners across Aotearoa. Visharn Sathiyakumar and Nina Luo, both based in Hamilton, are featured in this series, funded by a grant from the New Zealand Resident Doctors’ Association.

In his episode, Sathiyakumar offers viewers an inside look at his journey as a doctor specializing in radiation oncology. He shares the challenges and triumphs of his profession, providing an authentic glimpse into his daily life. Luo, on the other hand, discusses her role as a doctor in the neonatal intensive care unit, where she balances the care of vulnerable newborns with the emotional needs of anxious parents.

Sathiyakumar, now in his fourth year of practice, describes himself as a “science and tech geek.” In an interview with the Waikato Herald, he revealed that his passion for medicine was ignited at the young age of 11, following the death of his grandfather from lung cancer. This personal experience has profoundly influenced his career path and commitment to patient care.
