The New Zealand Breakers suffered a frustrating defeat against the Adelaide 36ers, losing 83-79 in a match that marked a missed opportunity for the struggling team. The game took place at Wolfbrook Arena in Christchurch on March 14, 2024. Despite leading at various points, the Breakers could not maintain their momentum, particularly in the final quarter.

With the third quarter concluding at 68-66 in favor of the Breakers, it seemed they were on the verge of securing back-to-back victories for the first time this season. However, an ice-cold fourth quarter proved detrimental. The Breakers failed to score for nearly six minutes, missing their first 14 attempts. It wasn’t until late in the quarter that import Rob Baker finally broke the drought with an alley-oop dunk, leaving just 1:45 on the clock.

Despite closing the gap from a nine-point deficit to just two points with under a minute remaining, the Breakers could not capitalize on their chances. Poor defensive plays and missed free throws ultimately sealed their fate. The defeat leaves the Breakers with a record of 3-8, placing them near the bottom of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) standings, while the 36ers improved to 7-2.

The Breakers started the match with a lackluster first quarter, trailing 22-14. They rebounded in the second quarter, scoring 33 points and taking a 47-43 lead into halftime. Izaiah Brockington was pivotal in that surge, contributing 25 points overall, shooting 9-of-15 from the field, including three 3-pointers. Parker Jackson-Cartwright also had a strong performance, adding 21 points along with 10 assists and five rebounds.

Despite these efforts, the Breakers struggled with scoring depth. Notably, leading scorer Sam Mennanga had an off night, finishing with only 7 points on 2-of-11 shooting. Several players appeared hesitant to take shots, which compounded their offensive woes in the crucial final moments.

On the other side, the 36ers were led by Bryce Cotton, who scored 23 points despite a slow start. Cotton, the league’s top scorer, found his rhythm later in the game, hitting seven of his 18 shots, including four from beyond the arc. Zylan Cheatham added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Flynn Cameron contributed 13 points, showcasing a balanced attack from Adelaide.

As the Breakers prepare for their next matchup against the Sydney Kings on March 17, they will need to address their late-game execution issues. The team has shown flashes of potential but must find consistency to climb the standings in a competitive NBL season.
