Young Apprentices Transform Lives Through Railway Mentorship

A new initiative at Steam and Rail in Oamaru is providing valuable mentorship to young apprentices aged 14 to 18. These candidates, recommended by local schools and correctional facilities, are learning essential skills while gaining social confidence. Harry Andrew, general manager of Steam and Rail, emphasized the significance of this program in helping youths who may face challenges such as learning difficulties or ADHD.

Andrew noted, “Even though you’re training them to be guards and drivers, you’re also helping them with their social skills and keeping them out of trouble.” He shared a success story about one apprentice whose transformation has left his family amazed. “I don’t know what the railway does to them, but it turns them around,” he added.

The apprentices spend two days each week at the workshop, acquiring hands-on experience in various areas, including welding, cutting steel with gas, train maintenance, and reassembling train gear. In addition to technical training, society members assist candidates with their educational and career aspirations, ensuring a holistic approach to their development.

Andrew expressed pride in the accomplishments of the mentees and the support provided by society members. He highlighted Luke Paisley, who joined the program at age 13 and, at 27, has become a fully qualified engineer operating his own business. “He’s tops,” Andrew remarked, showcasing the potential of the program to foster leadership and entrepreneurship.

Another standout participant has achieved level 4 certification as a steam driver, and Andrew is hopeful that this individual will qualify for the Mayoral TaskForce For Jobs, which aims to secure employment opportunities for local youth.

Steam and Rail was established in 1985 by volunteers dedicated to preserving and operating locomotives and a portion of the former New Zealand Railways yard in Oamaru’s Historic Precinct. This commitment to community service continues to impact the lives of young people, providing them with skills and confidence to navigate their futures successfully.

Through mentorship and training, the program not only teaches essential skills but also offers young people a chance to build a better life, illustrating the profound impact that dedicated organizations like Steam and Rail can have on their communities.
