Interior Designer Matt Reid Shares Insights on All-White Interiors

Matt Reid, the design lead at Warren and Mahoney in Wellington, has recently been recognized as the “emerging design professional” at the 2025 Interior Awards. His work emphasizes a personalized approach to design, focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by each project. In a recent Q&A, Reid discussed his passion for interior design and offered valuable insights for homeowners.

Reid’s career in architecture spans over 12 years, where he has worked on diverse projects across New Zealand. He believes that every client and site requires a tailored approach. “One size does not fit all,” Reid stated, emphasizing the importance of understanding individual needs and aspirations.

Personal Journey into Design

Born and raised in Taranaki, Reid was inspired by his father, a plumber, to explore the world of construction. His childhood visits to building sites sparked a fascination with architectural processes. Drawing has been a lifelong passion, and Reid pursued his interest academically at Victoria University of Wellington, graduating with a Master of Interior Architecture in 2013.

Reid’s design philosophy prioritizes three fundamental values: people, place, and possibilities. He believes that understanding the client is crucial for creating inspiring environments. “People are the spark that ignites an environment,” he explained. His emphasis on the surrounding context ensures that each project embodies a sense of place and belonging, while also embracing challenges that can transform potential issues into innovative solutions.

Life in Pinehaven

Reid and his wife, Natasha Kowalak-Reid, reside in Pinehaven, a suburb of Upper Hutt, with their two young children, Briarly and Ollie. They purchased their home in 2018, a 1946 weatherboard house that required significant renovations. Initially described by their real estate agent as “an easy embrace,” the property proved to be quite the challenge.

“From the start, it felt colder inside than outside,” Reid recalled. The couple, lacking renovation experience, transformed the small, 96 square meter home into a light-filled, inviting space. Over the years, they gutted the interior, added insulation, and created social spaces that connect with the outdoors. The exterior underwent enhancements as well, including a new roof, fresh paint, and landscaping.

With the arrival of their children, the pace of renovation has slowed. Reid noted, “The tool belt has been traded in for exploring different playgrounds.” Their focus has shifted to enjoying their newly renovated home while they plan to finish landscaping in the coming years.

Design Advice for Homeowners

Reid’s approach to commercial design translates well to residential projects. He advises homeowners to consider the balance between social and private spaces, tailoring the design to reflect their lifestyle. Understanding the characteristics of the location can also influence material choices, fostering a sense of belonging in the home.

“Identify the best view shafts to the surrounding context,” Reid suggests, emphasizing the importance of framing views with thoughtful design elements. He encourages homeowners to embrace the unique features of their buildings, whether new or old, as these elements can unlock remarkable potential.

Reid also emphasizes the significance of viewing homes as long-term investments. “As homeowners, we are guardians for only a short period,” he said. Balancing personal expression with potential resale value is crucial. He encourages homeowners to inject personality through easily changeable elements like furniture and accessories, allowing for flexibility over time.

Reflecting on his own home, Reid and his family uncovered beautiful native timber flooring during renovations. Instead of viewing imperfections as flaws, they embraced the wood’s history, integrating it into their design. They painted walls in Resene Alabaster to create a gallery-like ambiance, allowing the timber’s character to shine.

Reid advises homeowners to spend time living in their spaces, learning about how light shifts throughout the year and identifying the best aspects of the surrounding environment. This understanding can lead to enhanced lifestyle experiences and more meaningful connections to their homes.
