NZ Breakers Claim Victory Over Tasmania JackJumpers, Boost Playoff Hopes
The NZ Breakers secured a crucial victory against the Tasmania JackJumpers, winning 99-86 at Spark Arena in Auckland. This win marks a significant milestone for the Breakers, placing them in playoff contention for the first time this season. With their fourth victory in five games, the team has jumped ahead of Tasmania into the top six of the Australian National Basketball League (ANBL).
The Breakers started strong, scoring the first nine points of the game and establishing an early lead. By the end of the first quarter, they had expanded their advantage to 17 points. Despite Tasmania’s attempts to close the gap, the Breakers maintained a 52-41 lead at halftime.
In the first half, both NBA prospect Karim Lopez and Tall Blacks star Sam Mennenga encountered foul trouble, each picking up three personal fouls. This forced them to start the third quarter on the bench, creating a challenging situation for the home team. American players Rob Baker and Izaiah Brockington stood out, contributing significantly to the scoreboard, with Brockington leading all scorers with 22 points.
The Breakers have struggled with maintaining leads throughout the season, and the game against Tasmania was no exception. After a strong start, they had to fend off a determined JackJumpers team that narrowed the margin to just two points at one stage. Lopez, coming off the bench, made an immediate impact by sinking a three-pointer on his first touch of the game. Mennenga also made headlines with a powerful dunk, further energizing the crowd.
As the game progressed, the JackJumpers remained within striking distance, trailing by ten points entering the final quarter. A crucial steal by Parker Jackson-Cartwright from American Tyger Campbell enabled the Breakers to extend their lead back to twelve points with just five minutes remaining. Despite some nervous moments for home fans as Tasmania crept closer, a timely three-pointer from Jackson-Cartwright with 1 minute 40 seconds left in the game provided the Breakers with a comforting buffer. He later assisted Lopez for another three-pointer, solidifying their advantage.
In addition to Jackson-Cartwright’s 16 points and 12 assists, Brockington’s performance highlighted the team’s depth and resilience. On the opposing side, American forward Bryce Hamilton was the standout for Tasmania, finishing with 21 points.
The NZ Breakers will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face the South East Melbourne Phoenix next Saturday. The team now stands at a pivotal moment in the season, with hopes of advancing further in the playoffs becoming increasingly tangible.
