James Gunn Hints at Supergirl’s Age Rating Ahead of Release

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has provided significant insights into the anticipated age rating for the upcoming film Supergirl, suggesting it will be accessible to a wide audience. During a recent roundtable discussion with TechRadar promoting the second season of Peacemaker, Gunn indicated that the film is unlikely to carry the mature rating some fans may have anticipated. Instead, he implied that it would align with the age classification of his previous project, Superman, which received a PG-13 rating in the United States and a 12A classification in the United Kingdom.
Gunn’s comments came as part of a broader conversation about age ratings for various projects within the shared cinematic universe, where characters from both family-friendly and adult-themed productions may interact. He stated, “So, you know, Superman was for everyone. Peacemaker is for an adult audience. Supergirl will be for everyone.” This approach is part of Gunn’s vision to deliver diverse narratives that cater to different audience segments, ranging from children to adults.
What to Expect from Supergirl
Scheduled for release on June 26, 2026, Supergirl was previously titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow before Gunn confirmed its shorter name in June 2024. The film will mark a significant addition to the DC Universe (DCU), and excitement is building among fans, especially following the reveal of the first image showcasing actress Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El.
The promotional materials for the film have already stirred interest, with Alcock’s character depicted in iconic settings beloved by DC comic aficionados. In a teaser that delighted fans, Alcock made a brief yet memorable appearance in Superman, hinting at her character’s role in the new cinematic landscape.
Following this, a recent poster for Supergirl showcased her superhero costume, presenting a bold interpretation of the traditional superhero image. The tagline, a rebellious twist on Superman’s famous “Look up,” suggests that this iteration of Supergirl will differ significantly from her cousin, Clark Kent, in terms of personality and tone.
Future of the DC Universe
As the DCU continues to evolve, Gunn’s approach underscores a commitment to storytelling diversity. He has highlighted that while some projects may target specific demographics, such as Clayface, which is set to be an R-rated horror film, others will maintain an inclusive focus. This strategy reflects an intention to craft a multifaceted narrative universe where various stories can coexist, engaging audiences of all ages.
In addition to Supergirl, Gunn is also working on other projects, including a Wonder Woman film, with the screenplay penned by the same writer responsible for the upcoming Supergirl script. As the release date approaches, further details and promotional content are expected to emerge, building anticipation for the next chapter in the DC Universe.
