Liam Lawson Secures Full-Time Formula 1 Seat for 2026 Season

Liam Lawson will compete full-time in Formula 1 during the 2026 season, having secured a seat with the Racing Bulls team. This marks a significant step in his career, as it will be his first complete season with a single team. Lawson began the 2025 season with Red Bull but transitioned to Racing Bulls after two races. His replacement, Yuki Tsunoda, will not have a full-time drive next year.

The recent team reshuffle has seen French driver Isack Hadjar promoted to Red Bull, where he will race alongside four-time world champion Max Verstappen. F2 driver Arvid Lindblad will join Lawson at Racing Bulls. In a statement, Lawson expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating, “I’m really looking forward to racing with VCARB in 2026. It’s an opportunity I’ll continue to be grateful for as we enter a year of change in F1.”

New Regulations and Team Changes

The 2026 season will bring new Formula 1 regulations, which include smaller cars and an increased reliance on electric power. These changes likely influenced Lawson’s retention on the team. Racing Bulls Team Principal Alan Permane praised Lawson’s performance, saying, “Liam has shown impressive performance and professionalism throughout this year. He has excelled when conditions have been at their hardest, and we look forward to building on this in 2026.”

Lawson also shared his readiness for the challenges ahead, stating, “I’m ready to get to work with the team as we prepare for the challenging season ahead. It’s going to be an exciting year, and I can’t wait to kick it off with my first pre-season with the team.”

Hadjar’s promotion was seen as a logical decision, given his strong performance throughout 2025. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has described him as a future star. Hadjar himself expressed his excitement about joining Red Bull, stating, “I feel ready to go to Red Bull and I am happy and proud they feel the same. It’s an awesome move, to work with the best and learn from Max is something I can’t wait for.”

Rising Talent and Shifting Dynamics

Lawson will be joined at Racing Bulls by 18-year-old Arvid Lindblad, who has been recognized as a promising future F1 driver. Lindblad has achieved two race victories in F2 this year and currently sits sixth in the championship standings as the season culminates this weekend in Abu Dhabi. He has a diverse background, with a Swedish father and an Indian mother, and previously won the Formula Regional Oceania Championship in New Zealand last summer. Reflecting on this significant milestone, Lindblad noted, “Since I started this journey at five years old, it was always my goal to be in Formula One, so it’s a proud moment to take this step.”

The reshuffle has left Tsunoda without a full-time seat after spending five years in Formula 1. The 25-year-old underperformed following his promotion to Red Bull, accumulating only 33 points compared to Lawson’s 38. As a result, Tsunoda will serve as Red Bull’s reserve driver in 2026.

As the 2025 season concludes with the final race in Abu Dhabi this weekend, all eyes will be on these drivers as they prepare for a transformative year in Formula 1.
