New Community Recreation Centre Opens to Combat Isolation

A new community recreational facility, the Baskets Plus Recreational Centre, officially opened in Warkworth on August 16, 2023. This initiative aims to provide adults and seniors with opportunities for engagement and companionship, addressing issues of isolation and loneliness. Located at the Rodney Masonic Lodge hall, above the Westpac Bank on Baxter Street, the centre will operate from Monday to Saturday.
The centre is the vision of health support worker Jo Kwagga. She highlights the importance of creating a space where individuals can unwind and socialize, particularly those feeling stressed or isolated. “The aim is to help people who are isolated and lonely, or people who want to wind down,” Kwagga explained.
Variety of Activities for All
Kwagga emphasizes the mental and physical health benefits these activities provide. “Indoor games and activities are great for anyone’s well-being,” she noted. Benefits include improved sleep quality, enhanced social connections, and better motor skills, along with the potential to alleviate anxiety and boredom. “Playing indoors provides a convenient and enjoyable experience all year round,” she added.
By fostering a welcoming environment, Kwagga aims to cultivate a sense of belonging among participants. “Participating in these activities creates a sense of belonging and contributes to building stronger communities,” she stated.
Affordable Access with Support Available
To make the centre accessible, entry fees will be approximately $25 per day from 11:00 to 16:00, or $15 per hour. These fees are intended to cover the costs associated with hiring the hall and employing staff to serve complimentary hot drinks and snacks. Kwagga has also assured that financial assistance will be available for those who may require it.
The Baskets Plus Recreational Centre is poised to be a valuable resource for the Warkworth community, encouraging social interaction and offering a reliable space for individuals seeking connection. For more information, interested parties can contact Jo Kwagga at 021 030 5632.
