David Seymour Receives Ukraine’s Order of Merit for Contributions

New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour has been awarded the Order of Merit, Third Class, one of Ukraine’s highest civilian honors. This recognition highlights Seymour’s significant contributions to supporting Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Details of the Award
The Order of Merit was conferred on October 12, 2023, during a ceremony held at the Ukrainian Embassy in Wellington. In attendance were various dignitaries, including representatives from the New Zealand government and the Ukrainian community. This award reflects not only Seymour’s political stance but also his efforts in advocating for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In his acceptance speech, Seymour expressed gratitude for the honor and reiterated New Zealand’s commitment to standing with Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of international solidarity in the face of aggression and pledged continued support for humanitarian and military aid initiatives aimed at helping Ukraine.
Significance of the Award
The Order of Merit, established in 1996, recognizes individuals and organizations for their exceptional service to Ukraine. The Third Class is one of three levels of the award, with higher classes reserved for extraordinary contributions. Seymour’s award underscores the strengthening ties between New Zealand and Ukraine, particularly as global support for Ukraine continues to grow.
This recognition also serves to highlight the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict. New Zealand has been vocal in its support for Ukraine, contributing aid and condemning Russian actions. As part of this commitment, the New Zealand government has pledged over $7 million in humanitarian assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict.
With this award, Seymour joins a select group of individuals recognized by Ukraine for their unwavering support, showcasing the impact of international cooperation in addressing global challenges.
