Strong Winds Damage Hokitika Primary School, Uproot Beloved Tree
Severe weather conditions in Hokitika, located on New Zealand’s South Island, caused significant damage over the weekend. On the night of March 2, 2024, strong winds uprooted a historic tree that had been a cherished play area for generations of students at Hokitika Primary School. Additionally, half of the roof of the school’s swimming pool building was torn off due to the high gusts.
Deputy Principal Tiff Stewart notified the community about the incident through social media. She urged parents to inform their children about the damage before returning to school on Monday. “Last night, strong winds blew down the big tree beside the school swimming pool. It was a lovely old tree, and generations of Hokitika Primary School tamariki have played in it. It will be missed,” she stated.
The beloved tree, which stood for decades, was a symbol of the school’s history and community spirit. Its loss is deeply felt among former and current students, as well as their families. The tree served as a gathering place for many outdoor activities, making its uprooting a poignant event for the local community.
Impact on School Facilities
The damage to the swimming pool building adds to the challenges faced by Hokitika Primary School. The partial roof loss may affect swimming lessons and other activities scheduled in the facility. Plans for repairs will likely be discussed in the coming days, with school officials assessing the extent of the damage.
The community’s response has been one of solidarity, as families and local residents express their support for the school. Many shared memories of the tree and its significance in their lives, demonstrating the deep-rooted connections that exist within the community.
Stewart noted the importance of addressing these events with children, emphasizing the sense of loss while also reassuring them about the school’s commitment to moving forward. “We will work on solutions that ensure our students continue to have a safe and enjoyable environment,” she assured parents.
As Hokitika Primary School prepares for the return of students, the community rallies together to support one another during this difficult time. The weather event serves as a reminder of nature’s power and its impact on local life, leaving both physical and emotional scars that will take time to heal.
