Severe Winds Damage Hokitika Primary School, Uproot Beloved Tree
Severe winds struck Hokitika Primary School on the South Island of New Zealand on March 16, 2024, causing significant damage to the school’s property. An old and cherished tree, which has been a playground fixture for generations, was uprooted, while a large segment of the roof from the swimming pool building was also torn away by the fierce gusts.
Deputy Principal Tiff Stewart announced the incident via social media, urging parents to prepare their children for the changes they would see when returning to school. She expressed the community’s sadness over the loss of the tree, stating, “Last night, strong winds blew down the big tree beside the school swimming pool. It was a lovely old tree, and generations of Hokitika Primary School tamariki/children have played in it. It will be missed.”
The damage occurred during a particularly intense storm that impacted several areas of the region, but the destruction at Hokitika Primary School highlights the vulnerability of longstanding community landmarks. The school, known for its nurturing environment, has been a cornerstone for local families, making the loss of the tree especially poignant.
Parents are now faced with the task of discussing this loss with their children, many of whom have fond memories associated with the tree. The school is prepared to support students as they process this event when they return on Monday.
Officials are assessing the full extent of the damage and will determine the necessary repairs to the swimming pool building. The community’s response has been one of resilience, with many expressing their sorrow over the tree’s loss while also looking forward to the school’s recovery and future improvements.
As Hokitika Primary School navigates this challenging situation, the bond between the school and its community remains strong, with plans to honor the legacy of the beloved tree in the hearts of its students.
