Eugene Levy Explores Global Adventures in The Reluctant Traveler
Eugene Levy, renowned for his entertaining roles in films like American Pie and the acclaimed series Schitt’s Creek, is embracing a new chapter as the host of Apple TV+’s travel series, The Reluctant Traveler. At 78 years old, the Canadian actor has embarked on an adventurous journey in the show’s third season, exploring diverse destinations that range from India to Austria and the breathtaking west coast of Canada.
In a recent interview with TV Guide, Levy shared insights into how he curated the “bucket list” for this eight-episode season. He emphasized that the selection emphasized not just stunning locations but also enriching experiences. For example, he describes visiting Mexico to participate in the Day of the Dead celebrations, travelling to Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day, and exploring the cultural phenomenon of K-pop in South Korea. Levy noted that each destination provided him with much more than he anticipated, transforming his travels into memorable adventures.
Royal Surprises and Global Recognition
During his time in London, Levy encountered an unexpected twist in his itinerary when he received an invitation from Prince William. Reflecting on this surprise, he stated, “It was a lovely surprise… We had a whole kind of monarchic game-plan for London.” Initially planning to visit iconic royal spots like The Goring Hotel and Windsor Castle, the chance meeting with the Prince became a highlight of the season, leading to a candid conversation that Levy described as “fascinating.”
The episode featuring this encounter has garnered attention worldwide, and Levy humorously remarked on the potential for a new career as a royal interviewer. He recalled the experience, saying, “He couldn’t have been more gracious… it was definitely a day that I’ll never forget.”
As Levy travels the globe, he is frequently recognized for his role in American Pie, though he noted that in certain areas, including parts of the British Isles, Schitt’s Creek is also widely appreciated. He shared a surprising moment from a family dinner in Costa Rica, where local guests reacted enthusiastically to a reference from American Pie, leaving him astounded by its global reach.
Lessons Learned Through Travel
Through his travels, Levy has gained valuable insights into the importance of engaging with local cultures. He expressed that the most enriching experiences come from conversations with residents. “I have learned that you get more out of the experience of travelling… by talking to the people who actually live there,” he explained. This newfound perspective has encouraged him to become more conversational and open while interacting with others, a skill he has enjoyed developing throughout the series.
When asked about potential future destinations, Levy expressed a keen interest in visiting New Zealand, citing its beauty and unique culture. He stated, “I would actually love to hit New Zealand,” and indicated he would discuss the possibility with the show’s producers.
As for his hometown of Toronto, Levy offered recommendations for visitors planning to explore the city. He highlighted the CN Tower as a must-see, noting its significance as one of the tallest freestanding structures in the world. He also encouraged attendees to catch a game featuring the Toronto Blue Jays, who are currently making strides toward the World Series.
Season 3 of The Reluctant Traveler is now available for streaming on Apple TV+, with new episodes releasing every Friday. Levy’s engaging approach to travel continues to captivate audiences, blending humor with genuine curiosity about the world.
