Mild Orange Celebrates Global Sound with New Album The//Glow

New Zealand-based band Mild Orange has gained significant traction in the global music scene since their debut album, Foreplay, in 2018. With tracks like “Some Feeling” and “Freak In Me” garnering tens of millions of streams, the four friends have continued to evolve their sound. Their latest album, The//Glow, pays homage to both the vibrant nightlife of their new home in London and the heartland rock that has accompanied their travels across the United States.
The transition from New Zealand to a bustling metropolis like London was a significant shift for the musicians, who are all alumni of Otago University. According to lead vocalist Mehrtens, the band has embraced the “strong” live music scene in their adopted city since moving there in 2022. This evolution reflects their desire to engage with a diverse audience and create music that resonates globally.
As an independent band, Mild Orange has carved out a unique niche in the music industry. They describe themselves as an “internet band,” which allows them to operate outside the traditional record label structure. Mehrtens expressed satisfaction with this independence, stating, “We have cultivated a lovely listenership and have made an effort to connect with people in all corners of the earth.” This approach not only fosters creativity but also ensures they remain in control of their artistic vision.
Innovative Sound and Personal Touch
Mild Orange prides itself on not being confined to a specific genre. “We just write how we feel or reflect on what we’ve been living at the time,” Mehrtens explained. Their latest single, “My Light,” showcases this ethos. Although the track features only two chords, it is layered with complexity, making its creation a challenging yet rewarding process. As Mehrtens remarked, “I’m so glad we persisted with it – it’s a bit of a banger.”
The song also serves as a personal tribute to Mehrtens’ wife, Summer. He conveys that the pressures of life can become overwhelming, but her unwavering support serves as a source of strength. “The weight of the world can get a bit intense sometimes, but she’s always there for me,” he shared. This blend of personal narrative and innovative sound reflects the band’s commitment to authenticity.
Mild Orange continues to thrive in the music industry by infusing their experiences into their work. Their dedication to crafting songs that resonate with listeners around the world is evident in both their lyrics and melodies. As they navigate the evolving landscape of music, the band remains focused on their passion for travel and connection.
In a time when the music industry is rapidly changing, Mild Orange stands out as a testament to the power of independence and creativity. Their journey from New Zealand to the international stage is not just about music; it is about the friendships and experiences that shape their art. Fans can look forward to more innovative sounds as the band continues to explore new horizons.
