Mild Orange Releases New Album Celebrating Global Connections

New Zealand band Mild Orange has released their latest album, The//Glow, which pays homage to their experiences in London and their love for heartland rock. Following the success of their 2018 debut album Foreplay, tracks like ‘Some Feeling’ and ‘Freak In Me’ have amassed tens of millions of streams, particularly among music fans in the United States.
Since establishing themselves in London in 2022, the four friends from Otago University have adapted to their new environment and embraced the vibrant live music scene. Lead vocalist Mehrtens describes the transition from New Zealand to a bustling metropolis as significant yet rewarding. “Three years on, we’re enjoying the strong live music scene in our adopted home,” he said.
As an independent band, Mild Orange operates outside the traditional music industry model. Their approach as an “internet band” has allowed them to cultivate a dedicated global audience without the constraints of a record label. “We’ve just cultivated a lovely listenership and really made an effort to connect with people in all corners of the earth,” Mehrtens explained. The band takes great pride in being a Kiwi group that aims to resonate with listeners worldwide.
Creative Independence and Musical Exploration
Mehrtens appreciates the creative freedom that comes with being an independent artist. “Maybe [record] labels are scared to talk to us or something,” he mused, reflecting on their autonomous approach to music creation. He emphasized that while their songs defy strict genre categorization, the band feels a responsibility to innovate and explore new sounds.
Their recent single, ‘My Light,’ exemplifies this creative drive. The track features just two chords but incorporates numerous layers, resulting in a complex sound. “I’m so glad we persisted with it – it’s a bit of a banger,” Mehrtens said. The song serves as a personal tribute to his wife, Summer, highlighting the challenges of life and the support she provides. “The weight of the world can get a bit intense sometimes, but she’s always there for me,” he added.
Connecting Through Music and Travel
Mild Orange’s shared passion for travel significantly influences their music. Their experiences from touring across the United States and living in various locations have shaped their artistic expression. The band’s dedication to connecting with fans extends beyond music; they aim to share the stories and emotions that arise from their journeys.
Reflecting on their evolution, Mehrtens noted that the band has maintained a positive online presence, free from negativity. This supportive environment has allowed them to focus on their artistry and build meaningful relationships with their audience. As they continue to release new music and embark on further adventures, Mild Orange remains committed to their vision of creating music that resonates universally.
With The//Glow, Mild Orange takes another step in their journey, blending their unique experiences into a sound that reflects their growth as artists and individuals.
