Influencers Critique Auckland Train Experience Amid Upgrades

Auckland Transport has responded to criticism following comments from a traveling influencer couple who labeled their recent train journey from Auckland Airport to Waitematā Station as the “worst” they have experienced. The couple, Sagar and Ami, known for their budget travel content, shared their experience in a video posted on September 22, 2023. They expressed their disappointment after returning to New Zealand from an extensive overseas trip.
Sagar and Ami, who describe themselves as full-time budget travelers, have spent the last 15 months exploring over two dozen countries. They returned to New Zealand to create content for their Instagram account, which has garnered a following of 17,000. During their journey, they aimed to showcase the beauty and challenges of traveling across New Zealand.
In their video, the couple candidly shared their sentiments about Auckland’s public transport, stating, “After spending so long traveling abroad, we didn’t think anything could surprise us. But Auckland trains? Oh, they delivered.” This comment highlighted their frustrations with delays and the overall experience during peak travel times.
Auckland Transport has defended the service, emphasizing that the delays are a result of significant upgrade works intended to improve the public transport system. These enhancements are described by the organization as “once-in-a-generation” improvements necessary to modernize the infrastructure and service offerings in Auckland.
Auckland Transport’s spokesperson acknowledged the inconvenience caused during this period but insisted that the upgrades are crucial for the long-term benefit of passengers. They assert that these improvements will ultimately lead to a more efficient and reliable transport system, enhancing the travel experience for all users.
The timing of these upgrades coincides with an increase in travel as New Zealand welcomes back international visitors. Officials at Auckland Transport noted that while temporary disruptions can lead to frustration among commuters, the benefits of a modernized transport system will be realized in the near future.
Sagar and Ami’s experience, while unique, sheds light on the challenges that public transport systems face during periods of significant improvement. Their comments resonate with many travelers who depend on public transport, especially during peak seasons.
Transport officials are hopeful that once the upgrades are completed, public perception of Auckland’s train services will improve. They encourage passengers to remain patient as the work progresses, assuring them that the enhancements will lead to a more user-friendly experience.
As the couple continues their travels across New Zealand, they remain committed to documenting their journey, sharing both the highlights and the setbacks they encounter along the way. Their candid commentary serves as a reminder of the importance of reliable public transport in enhancing the travel experience for both locals and visitors.
