Luxembourg Under-21 Team Involved in Bus Crash Ahead of Match

Rennes, France: The Luxembourg Under-21 football squad experienced a serious bus accident while en route to a Euro 2027 qualifier, resulting in five individuals being treated in hospital. The incident was confirmed by both the Luxembourg and French football federations on Friday.
According to the Luxembourg Football Federation, all five individuals have since been discharged after receiving necessary medical treatment. The crash occurred between Lorient and Pontivy in western France when the bus veered off the road and into a ditch after the driver fell ill, as reported by the bus company.
Support for the Injured and Rescheduled Match
Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation, expressed his support for those affected by the incident. “We show all our support and we hope for a quick recovery for the members of the Luxembourg delegation who were hurt and shocked, as well as the driver of the bus,” he stated.
The Euro 2027 qualifying match originally scheduled for Friday has been postponed to October 3, 2024. The bus was transporting the team from their training session back to the hotel.
Investigation into the Incident
The bus driver, a 53-year-old with nine years of experience in the position, has no history of traffic accidents, according to the bus company. They stated that his recent medical examinations were satisfactory, and both alcohol and drug tests returned negative results. Additionally, the vehicle had passed a thorough technical inspection in July 2025.
This incident underscores the importance of safety protocols in sports travel. As investigations continue, the focus remains on the well-being of the players and staff involved. The Luxembourg football community, along with their supporters, remains hopeful for a swift recovery for all affected by this unfortunate event.
