Photographer Tracey Scott Revives Rotorua’s Historic Te Hemo Villa
Photographer Tracey Scott has embarked on an ambitious project to restore the historic Te Hemo villa in Rotorua, a property she has admired since childhood. The villa, a two-storey colonial structure, was originally built by timber magnate Sir Charles Kusabs between 1897 and 1906. Scott’s affection for the house began during her family car rides past the iconic site, where she often dreamt of calling it her own.
From Dream to Reality
Scott’s connection to Te Hemo has deep roots. As a child, she would gaze at the villa and tell her father, “There’s my house.” This childhood admiration transformed into a life-changing opportunity when Scott was finally able to purchase the property. Her journey from a captivated observer to the owner of this historic site is a testament to her passion for both photography and history.
In an interview with RNZ’s Culture 101, Scott reflected on the villa’s architectural significance and its storied past. “It took a long time to build,” she noted, emphasizing the craftsmanship that went into creating a home that has withstood the test of time. The villa, with its unique colonial design, has become a symbol of Rotorua’s rich heritage.
A Passion for Preservation
The restoration of Te Hemo is not just a personal project for Scott; it represents a commitment to preserving Rotorua’s history for future generations. As she meticulously works on restoring the villa, Scott aims to maintain its authenticity while also ensuring it meets modern standards.
In addition to her restoration efforts, Scott is keen to share the villa’s history with the community. She plans to host events and open days, allowing locals and visitors alike to appreciate the architectural beauty and historical significance of Te Hemo. “I want people to experience the magic of this place,” she stated.
Scott’s work on Te Hemo is a reminder of the importance of heritage preservation. As more historic buildings face the threat of neglect or demolition, her dedication serves as an inspiring example of how one individual’s passion can lead to meaningful change.
As the restoration progresses, Scott looks forward to seeing the villa regain its former glory. The journey not only fulfills her childhood dream but also enriches the cultural landscape of Rotorua, ensuring that the story of Te Hemo will continue to be told for generations to come.
