PSG Secures Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth for $76.7 Million

Paris Saint-Germain has officially announced the signing of Ukrainian defender Illia Zabarnyi from Premier League club Bournemouth for approximately £57 million ($76.7 million or €66 million). The announcement was made on Tuesday, marking a significant addition to the French side’s defensive lineup.
In a statement, PSG expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Zabarnyi, who becomes the first Ukrainian player to don the club’s colors. This historic signing signifies PSG’s commitment to enhancing their squad ahead of the upcoming season.
Zabarnyi’s Impressive Track Record
The 22-year-old defender had a standout season with Bournemouth, where he played a crucial role in the team’s ninth-place finish in the Premier League for the 2024-2025 season. His performances earned him the title of Bournemouth’s player of the season, as voted by the club’s supporters.
His arrival in Paris could pose challenges for established players like Brazilian defender Marquinhos, who may face increased competition for a starting position. This change reflects PSG’s ongoing strategy to bolster their defensive capabilities as they aim to maintain their status at the top of European football.
Impact on Bournemouth’s Roster
Zabarnyi’s transfer is part of a larger trend at Bournemouth, who have seen three of their first-choice defenders depart this summer. Following Zabarnyi’s transfer, Milos Kerkez moved to Premier League champions Liverpool, and Dean Huijsen was sold to Real Madrid. This shake-up raises questions about the club’s defensive depth as they prepare for the new season.
PSG’s acquisition of Zabarnyi comes shortly after their signing of highly-regarded goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille. This move has sparked speculation regarding the future of Italian international goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has not been included in the squad for the upcoming European Super Cup final against Tottenham in Italy.
In May 2024, PSG celebrated a historic triumph by defeating Inter Milan 5-0 to secure their first Champions League title. The club’s recent signings indicate a strong desire to build on that success and solidify their dominance in European football.
The transfer of Illia Zabarnyi not only enhances PSG’s defensive lineup but also highlights the increasing trend of clubs investing heavily in young talent to secure future successes.
