Wellington Welcomes First Dedicated Orthopaedic Day-Stay Hospital

A new chapter in orthopaedic care has begun in Wellington with the opening of the region’s first dedicated orthopaedic day-stay hospital. The Wellington Surgical Centre, located next to Southern Cross Wellington Hospital in Newtown, is designed to enhance patient access to orthopaedic services without the need for overnight stays.
The purpose-built facility features two operating theatres, a five-bed post-anaesthetic care unit, and a lounge accommodating five patients for day-stay services. The range of surgical procedures offered includes operations on the knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, hand, and arm. This initiative marks a significant improvement in the delivery of orthopaedic healthcare in the region.
Collaboration and Community Impact
The Wellington Surgical Centre is a joint venture involving a group of orthopaedic specialists and Southern Cross Healthcare. It forms part of the larger redevelopment of the Southern Cross Healthcare campus in Wellington, which also includes upgrades to existing facilities and the introduction of advanced robotic capabilities in surgery.
Alison Hegarty, General Manager of the facility, expressed enthusiasm about the opening. “The team has been working towards this day for a long time and is very excited to be welcoming our first patients,” she stated. The centre aims to provide timely and convenient access to high-quality orthopaedic care, aligning with the growing healthcare needs of the community.
The involvement of experienced professionals is a key component of the new facility’s approach. Robert Rowan, an orthopaedic surgeon and venture partner, emphasized the importance of this development, saying it represents a significant step forward for patients. He noted that the centre allows for “enhanced access to quality care delivered by some of the region’s most experienced orthopaedic specialists.”
Seamless Services and Future Prospects
In conjunction with the Wellington Surgical Centre, Affinity Medical Imaging has also opened at the same location, providing a comprehensive radiology service. This integration is expected to streamline orthopaedic services, further enhancing patient experience.
Chris White, Chief Executive of Southern Cross Healthcare, highlighted the importance of partnerships with medical specialists in advancing healthcare provision in New Zealand. “With 22 hospitals and day-stay facilities, Southern Cross Healthcare plays an important role in supporting the country’s healthcare capacity and access,” he remarked.
The establishment of the Wellington Surgical Centre is not just a milestone for the Wellington region but also a reflection of the ongoing commitment to improving healthcare accessibility across New Zealand. With modern facilities and a team of skilled professionals, the centre is set to make a considerable impact on the community’s health and well-being.
