David Seymour Receives Ukraine’s Order of Merit for Service

David Seymour, the Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand, has been honoured with the Order of Merit, Third Class, one of Ukraine’s highest civilian awards. This recognition highlights Seymour’s significant contributions to strengthening ties between New Zealand and Ukraine, especially during ongoing challenges faced by the Eastern European nation.
The award was presented to Seymour in a ceremony held on October 15, 2023, in Wellington. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including representatives from the Ukrainian government and local officials. This accolade not only underscores Seymour’s commitment to international support but also reflects New Zealand’s solidarity with Ukraine in its efforts against external threats.
Significance of the Order of Merit
The Order of Merit is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to Ukraine, particularly in the fields of culture, science, and international relations. The Third Class of this award is reserved for those who have made substantial contributions to the country’s development and its diplomatic relations. By receiving this honour, Seymour joins a distinguished group of international figures recognized for their advocacy and support for Ukraine.
In his acceptance speech, Seymour expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the importance of maintaining strong international alliances. He stated, “This award is a testament to the shared values of democracy and freedom that bind our nations together. New Zealand stands firmly with Ukraine in its pursuit of sovereignty and peace.”
Strengthening New Zealand-Ukraine Relations
New Zealand has taken a proactive role in supporting Ukraine since the onset of the conflict in 2022. The country has provided humanitarian aid, military support, and diplomatic backing in international forums. Seymour has been instrumental in navigating these efforts, ensuring that New Zealand’s contributions are both impactful and aligned with global initiatives.
The awarding of the Order of Merit to Seymour represents not only personal recognition but also a broader commitment by New Zealand to uphold democratic values worldwide. As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, this award serves as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation and mutual respect among nations.
Seymour’s honour comes at a critical time as Ukraine seeks to bolster its international alliances in the face of ongoing challenges. With this accolade, both he and New Zealand reaffirm their dedication to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and democratic aspirations.
