Farm Cove Intermediate School Celebrates ‘Property Pete’ After 30 Years

Peter Hillgrove, affectionately known as ‘Property Pete’, is stepping down from the board of trustees at Farm Cove Intermediate School after nearly 30 years of dedicated service. The school community gathered to celebrate his contributions with a special morning tea on August 29, 2023, marking the end of an era for both Hillgrove and the school.
During his tenure, Hillgrove played a crucial role in overseeing the development and modernization of the school’s facilities. Principal Tamara Jones praised Hillgrove as a “legend” within the school, highlighting his reliability and commitment. “Pete is our person who I can rely on, at any time, to call if I need help with something or what’s happening with the property,” she stated.
Hillgrove’s connection to the school runs deep. His daughters attended Farm Cove Intermediate, and he remained involved long after they graduated. “My role was to make sure the grounds and the buildings were safe for everybody,” Hillgrove explained. He was actively engaged in various school activities, from sports days to camp trips. “I enjoyed it and got to help with meals at nighttime,” he added, reflecting on his time spent supporting students and staff.
As part of his commitment, Hillgrove participated in school events such as the cross-country competitions, where he provided first aid to students. He also organized popular school discos and celebrated graduations, relishing the moments when students would toss their hats in the air.
Hillgrove’s departure from the board has stirred strong emotions. He expressed that stepping down will be “bloody hard” for him, as he will miss the daily interactions with teachers and students. “I love this school,” he remarked, emphasizing the strong bond he has developed over the years.
The principal shared that Hillgrove’s influence extended beyond maintenance and facilities. “He looks after the staff so they can do the best job for the children,” Jones noted. “You can’t ask for more than that from a board member. His support has been incredible.”
As Hillgrove leaves his position, he reflected on the dedication of the staff at Farm Cove Intermediate. He commended them for giving “110 per cent-plus” and mentioned how the school fosters professional development, allowing teachers to advance their careers.
The farewell gathering was not only a tribute to Hillgrove’s contributions but also a celebration of the lasting impact he has had on the school community. His legacy will undoubtedly be felt for years to come as Farm Cove Intermediate continues to thrive.
With his retirement, the school community bids a heartfelt farewell to a figure who has been synonymous with their growth and success. Hillgrove’s journey may have reached a milestone, but his spirit will remain a part of Farm Cove Intermediate School’s fabric.
