Green Gables Cottage Reopens with New Art Showcase on October 4

The historic Green Gables Cottage in Hawthendon Reserve, Howick, will reopen for public art viewings on October 4, 2023, following extensive renovations and a fresh coat of paint. This cherished community space, owned by the Auckland Council, aims to celebrate its refurbishment through an artistic showcase featuring local talent.
Art Group Enthusiastic About Reopening
The Howick Art Group expressed excitement about the reopening of their gallery, which has been a beloved venue for art enthusiasts. Julie Mitchell, a representative of the group, highlighted that the reopening coincides with the arrival of spring, making the theme of renewal particularly fitting. “We’re presenting new works showcasing renewal and fresh beginnings,” she stated.
The gallery will feature works from group members both inside the cottage and outdoors, weather permitting. Visitors can look forward to a vibrant display of creativity, with many artists showcasing their pieces on easels under gazebos on the patio and throughout the surrounding reserve.
Engaging the Community and Celebrating Creativity
Mitchell noted that members displaying their artwork will be present to discuss their creative processes. Some artists will even paint “en plein air,” offering visitors a real-time glimpse into their artistic methods. This interactive element aims to engage the community and foster appreciation for the arts.
Recently, the Howick Art Group celebrated a successful 60th anniversary spring exhibition, receiving positive feedback from attendees regarding the high quality of the artwork on display. The upcoming exhibition at the refurbished cottage gallery promises to maintain that standard, showcasing a diverse range of mediums and techniques from its talented members.
Open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on October 4, the event also provides opportunities for community bonding. “Parking can be found on Fencible Drive, just a short walk from the reserve. We may even have a coffee cart and ice cream available,” Mitchell added, inviting the public to join in the celebration. “We’d love to see you!”
The reopening of Green Gables Cottage marks not just a return to form for a treasured local venue, but a renewed commitment to the arts in the Howick community. Local residents and visitors alike are encouraged to partake in this celebration of creativity and community spirit.
